RIDGE TILE RE-BEDDING &
LEAD FLASHING IN BRISTOL

Loose or cracked ridge tiles are one of the most common causes of roof leaks in Bristol properties. Over time, the traditional mortar bedding dries out, shrinks and cracks allowing ridge tiles to shift, lift or fall away, and water to penetrate the ridge line. This is particularly common in older Bristol properties, including Victorian terraces in Bedminster and Clifton, where the original mortar may be many decades old.

Gibbs Roofing carries out full ridge tile re-bedding and re-pointing using modern flexible mortar that moves with the thermal expansion and contraction of the roof rather than cracking in cold weather. We also carry out all types of lead flashing work including lead flashing repairs and full replacements around chimneys, dormers, skylights, abutments and valley gutters across Bristol.

All lead work is carried out to Code 4 or Code 5 lead specification, correctly dressed, stepped and sealed for a weathertight, long-lasting finish. Serving homeowners across Clifton, Bedminster, Redland, Horfield, Keynsham and all Bristol postcodes.

How do I know if my ridge tiles need re-bedding?

Signs include cracked or missing mortar at the ridge line, ridge tiles that move or rock when touched, tiles that have already shifted or fallen away, or damp patches on the ceiling near the apex of the roof. If your Bristol property is more than 20–30 years old and the ridge hasn’t been touched, a survey is strongly recommended.

Re-bedding involves fully removing the ridge tiles, clearing away all old mortar, and re-setting the tiles on fresh flexible mortar beds. Re-pointing is the application of new mortar over the existing joints without removing the tiles suitable only where the underlying mortar beds are still sound and the tiles are firmly seated.

All Gibbs Roofing lead work is carried out using Code 4 lead (minimum 1.8mm) for most flashing applications, and Code 5 lead (2.24mm) for areas subject to greater wear, high-foot-traffic zones or lead soakers. We follow Lead Sheet Association guidelines for lap lengths, bonding and weathering.

Yes — lead flashing repairs are standalone jobs in many cases. We can inspect, repair or fully replace failed lead flashings around chimneys, dormers, skylights and abutments independently of any wider roof work. We’ll advise honestly on whether a repair or full replacement is the better option.
